http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and ... ns-1177503Seems incredibly expensive for a company that was allegedly circling the drain; MS would need to have one hell of a roadmap to challenge Apple and Samsung at this point I'm thinking

I think its about getting a hardware company to build win phones and all the expertise plus access to all those nokia patents.
Still crazy money though!

It was about those patents. If they waited till they went bust then Google might have snapped them up in a bidding war.

I think it's more interesting the Nokia CEO is now prime running for the next MS CEO spot.

But Nokia keeps the patents, MS can just use them for a few years, and Nokia gets to use the MS location aware patents as well. And Nokia are only barred from making new smartphones themselves for 2 years. That said, the price is low for the Nokia smartphone division. Setting up the factories to build the phones and buying up the design talent would have cost them a lot more than 3.6 billion Euros.

Given that people only associate Nokia with mobile phones, what are they going to do as a company now they've sold their phone business to Microsoft?

But would Nokia re enter the smartphone market? Unlikely. If they have to start again from scratch it does not make sense to try. They are better sticking to other markets. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

From what I read the terms of the buyout are such that Nokia are banned from making a smartphone for the next 10 years. By then, I suspect the term 'smartphone' will be as relevant as 'gramophone'.

This will mean that the relevant skills at Nokia will have long been degraded by the passage of time. Unless the patents are broad I cannot see why they would still hold them? Unless there is a deal where by Microsoft get first refusal for them at a set price. It could guarantee an income stream for Nokia in the meantime.

Ms can make anything using a Nokia patent, if the patent infringes anyone else, Nokia get sued not MS MS make more from patents/licensing than WP8 sales since 2011 IIRC

Then that makes a lot more sense. It explains why the arrangement is the way it is.

Going back to their Core, profitable business. Wellies and mobile network technology (back bone and antennas).
