An episode of Click suggested that you get a false but good impression of depth with 4K

It'll certainly be a long time before I get a new TV, hopefully.

It might all be 8K by then. All these changes might actually put off people.

I'll believe it when I see it - I haven't been that impressed with BR never mind what TV calls HD, it just hasn't been enough of a jump.

I have seen 1080p on my iMac screen and it is better than on my HD TV. 4k is supposed to be 4 times better resolution, so should be an improvement.

What size telly is that on? The only time hd has made me go "wow" is on a 50" telly. Most of the hd tellys I've seen have been 32" and not very much better than my 28" Sony wega CRT. Certainly my cheap 26" full hd telly has a worse picture at 1080p than my CRT at sd.

I can certainly see the difference between HD and SD on my 32" TV. But what got me was the poor encoding quality of British television (SD) last time I visited. It felt like watching TV on a mid 90s computer, the colours ran into each other and there was severe banding of colour, where large areas of colour were displayed. The worst were night scenes, where the digital banding of the colours was very marked, with visible rings of shading around street lamps etc.

That was something that used to bug me about Sky, when I lived in the UK, watching films on Sky, compared to watching them on DVD, you could see where they were heavily over compressed and the picture was ruined. It was the same in the hotels in 2011. That might have been down to a multiplexer or something, but the image quality was pretty poor.

British TV does have that issue. You can often see coloured squares on your TV where there's a large amount of a similar color. eg If there's a green field in the background. HD broadcasts don't seem to have that problem.

That's compression artifacting most likely. HD broadcasts get much more bandwidth to play with and in any case it's less noticeable the higher definition your picture is. If they hadn't tried to cram as many channels as is possible in to the spectrum - including ones which frankly no bugger must actually ever watch - they wouldn't have the problem.

37'' in my case, but I didn't think it was great on any size of TV. I actually know some full-on AV nerds who still buy DVDs cos the benefit to price factor is often neglible (there's a lot of factors at play there tbf), and would have kept their big-ass CRTs if they could have.
