If you read some of the comments below it seems not. Bizarrely most fail to appreciate that they are literally only one paycheque from being in the same situation. |

Which is why it's always a good idea to save for a rainy day. I'm glad we did. Our savings supported us for the six months I was unemployed a few years ago. Good job I got a new one though. They wouldn't have lasted much longer. |

The problem is that the savings limit for benefits if £6000 is still way above most peoples savings. Unless they are saving for a mortgage they will probably be in debt, and if they have a mortgage they cannot save that much. Also the because of the way benefits are calculated there is a huge problem with working out whether you will be better taking a job, if both are unemployed. They need to make sure that if someone cannot work then they do not become dependent on their partners income for things like housing benefit. |
