Considering the NSA are determined to breach just about every aspect of technology and that companies like Apple can't/won't even say how far that goes, I fully expect they'll now want access to a fingerprint database, on the chip or not.

The good part, for the like of customs, police etc. Is that they no longer have to ask for passwords to access iPhones, they just push your finger on the button and have full access to your data.

And they can take it without your co-operation. A few burly officers holding your fingers in the right way and it is opened.

The don't even need tip do that. You have to give finger prints when you're arrested. I'm sure they could open it easily enough.

Bear in mind they often take your fingerprints when you're the victim of crime. If you've been burgled you've probably been fingerprinted. OK, they have to erase them after the case is closed, but they're on the police computer in the meantime...

More details

Allegedly, the 5s sensor is the first of a new generation to hit the shelves. Rather than doing conductance or heat based mapping, it does an RF 'scan' of your fingerprint that can't be fooled by a 'fake finger' (or at least, one that doesn't cost considerably more than an iPhone) or by a finger that's been er.. liberated from the phone's owner.

There are already concerns about its civil liberty issues in the US.

Only by people who apparently have absolutely no conception of what the phrase 'civil liberty' actually means.
