She said she would prefer one A-level less on a CV if it translated into a candidate with social skills. "We have just had a chap in. On paper he looked fabulous; he had brilliant qualifications. On the second day he had to write a letter – he couldn't do it. It was appalling really.

Makes you query the quality of the exams?

Maybe it would be better to allow them to go to Eton for a term and give them a school tie.

And their selection process, to be fair.

Last ear, I was pondering a business venture (didn’t pan out for a humber of reasons - and the end of the year made me glad that I hadn’t seen it through), and one thing I was thinking of was to have any people I interviewed for a job take a small numeracy and literacy test. Basically wanting to see if they can add up, handle cash, spell, punctuate and generally communicate well. A small business needs people who can communicate effectively. So, yes, I may well have taken fewer paper qualifications if someone could write a letter.

If the exams and the teaching does not impart the kids with some sort of writing ability what are they doing?

Roughly the same thing that your teachers did, to go by the evidence of the sentence above.

There is a big difference between being able to write and writing business letters.
