As long as you don't eat it or snort it and wash your hands after use one would assume the actual risk of infection is relatively small. Mind you, it might mean parent would be needing to be more cautious about letting little ones help out in the garden.

My attitude has always been a little dirt does the immune system good. Though are most species of legionella harmless like most salmonella in eggs?

I think the move away from peat based composts is due to peat running out?

I'm guessing the fact that peat is dual purpose and can be used as a rather good fuel for stoves / fires means it's more likely to run out quicker. Also possible that one purpose means it commands a higher price than the other purpose can consider reasonable.

It is also a unique habitat for some wildlife so there is a limit to how much they can use without endangering the balance of nature.
