We're not much better in this regard, but at least we're not trying to spit-shine the past.

Pretty much every WWII-influenced game I've ever seen was a "spit-shine" as you put it.

It'd be nice to see a game that showed the Soviets turning back the advance of the Axis instead of the pretence that it was all due to Captain America and his British chums. How many games are there out there that allow the player to play as Mikhail Surkov or Ludmila Pavlichenko using a Mosin-Nagant? Or as a T-42 driver during the Battle of Kursk?

The original Call of Duty had a lot of that IIRC. It wasn't afraid of showing the odd fcuk-up at least.

To solve this, a new video game project has been set up by the culture minister. Headed by the Russian Military Historical Society, the project will initially focus on the development of one game, due for release in 2014, which will be based on Russian military aviation during the First World War.

Didn't they lose that one?

Depends how you define it. They pulled out when the October revolution happened but it would be a bit of a stretch to suggest anyone 'won' WWI. If anything, the fact they ducked out early makes them a winner as it just means fewer of them got slaughtered by it. What came after more than made up for that though...

I think it would be easier to say everybody lost WW1.
Especially as the restrictions on Germany after the war allowed the rise of the Nazi's.
