Post subject:  Google Changes T&C To Put User Content In Ads

New York Times Article

Quote:
On Friday, Google announced an update to its terms of service that allows the company to include adult users’ names, photos and comments in ads shown across the Web, based on ratings, reviews and posts they have made on Google Plus and other Google services like YouTube. When the new ad policy goes live Nov. 11, Google will be able to show what the company calls shared endorsements on Google sites and across the Web, on the more than two million sites in Google’s display advertising network, which are viewed by an estimated one billion people.

If a user follows a bakery on Google Plus or gives an album four stars on the Google Play music service, for instance, that person’s name, photo and endorsement could show up in ads for that bakery or album.

Google said it would give users the chance to opt out of being included in the new endorsements, and people under the age of 18 will automatically be excluded.

So they're basically relying on apathy? I can't see it catching on either way :?

Yes but to opt out you have to identify yourself and possibly accept a tracking cookie to make sure that you are not used this way. It should be opt in.

It is.

The opt-in stage happens when you use Google services. They're 'free' for a reason

I appreciate it is the faustian bargain that we have agreed to when we use a free service. Though did we sign up for all our content be used for such a service? We might have accepted the tracking so that they can get better targeted and better paid ads, but did we agree to our content being used this way? Fortunately for me there is bugger all content from me out there from me as the originator.

I'm glad I stopped rating things on Google Play when google started insisting on logging in on Google+ to rate them.

From now on, yes. The mass of people who signed up for Google's services under previous T&C should get a better option than 'if you don't want it, don't use Google any more'. You can't change an existing contract and say to other party "If you don't like it you can always [LIFTED] off".

It is the best option. I now refuse to like anything online because of this.

Presumably a lot of people actually like the "fame" it brings. They must, because Facebook have been doing it for years.

It is probably more of a matter of not caring. While I do not do much that really warrants such attention, it is disconcerting that people will post absolutely anything without fear of the consequences.
