It baffles me how all these people have so much valuable work not backed up. I have sympathy for the fact that he r laptop was stolen but none for her work.

That depends. She may have had data backed up on a NAS box (or similar), but there's a chance that could have been stolen too.
I keep backups on a NAS box and a USB HDD. But if someone burgled my house there's always a chance they could take all three.

It does depend where they are kept. The USB HDD is usually next to the laptop. The NAS might be better hidden. There are also online cloud storage to back up to. I have hundreds of gigs of data. I dread to think how long that would take to upload to a cloud server. Not that I trust cloud services (especially US ones) anyway.

I have many terabytes but that would be impossible to back up to a cloud service. Though I do think that US cloud services could struggle to get foreign businesses to sign up now that the NSA have become an issue, especially with the ease that so many NSA contractors can get access.
