Beloved children's show, the Clangers is being resurrected, with a new series in production for CBeebies in 2015.

Debuting in 1969, the show told the tale of a race of knitted aliens eking out a threadbare existence on a cold blue planet, not far from Earth.

The pink, mouse-like creatures lived in craters covered by dustbin lids - whose noisy "clang" gave the show its name.

The £5m production is already under way, and is being co-produced by US pre-school TV channel Sprout, which will broadcast the programme in North America.

Uh oh. This screams “cgi” - and not the nice kind, but the rather nasty kind that permeates children’s animation.

For example: Fireman Sam made out of real stuff:

Foreman Sam made out of pixels"

The CGI version just looks slippery, with no intrinsic detail. For example, look at his jacket in both images.

Remember, people, The Clangers were knitted and the episodes were made in a barn in Kent. The music was recorded in a local church hall.

To be honest, thats got to have been a style choice. You can do perfectly good CGI wool/fur/fabric these days if you want to.

I'm cautiously optimistic about 'New Clangers'. It can be CGI if they like, provided it retains the.. charm and innocence of the original.

I expect the target audience are probably more receptive of CGI.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

It looks like it’s been cranked out cheaply using a rendering engine that favours speed.

There’s a similar image quality to Thomas the Tank Engine

It’s a kind of slightly glowing not quite supported by the ground look.

I am hoping that if they do go down the CGI route, that they will spend that massive wad of cash on making them look properly knitted. We are hoping here that it’s done by the people who do RastaMouse - the animation on that is rather nice.

Just seen a report on BBC News. The scriptwriter is the son of the original series scriptwriter and he says it's going to be traditional animation and very much 'in the spirit' of the original Clangers.
Hope so.

That's promising. I hope he's right.
