Meh. As I posted in the other thread, this is one guy looking at the same data that others have looked at. He's not a "senior" doctor, he's a junior doctor - a trainee! Having said that, I've always believed that cholesterol/fatty diet is only part of the story. The other thing to remember that statins confer extra benefit over and above other cholesterol-lowering medication despite the same reduction in cholesterol, and we don't know why. |

It said he was a registrar which I thought was the level immediately below consultant? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |

Yes but where in the registrar post is he? He may be anywhere from just starting to say seven years in. Also he's still a junior doctor. He becomes senior once he's at consultant level. |

I thought he was a senior doctor certainly not a junior. Though consultants are still above registrars. He is still a qualified doctor even if his title says junior doctor to you. On the same basis you are merely a junior doctor as well, which seems wrong as you probably have done a residency which would be a junior role, and so you could not now still be classified as a junior doctor? |

No, I'm not a junior. A senior doctor is essentially one who has completed my training and on that basis, I could call myself a senior doctor. You're qualified provisionally as soon as you graduate and formally after twelve months. My points were: 1. The media have made him out to be a "top expert" when he's nothing of the kind. 2. The media (and probably the doctor) have spun this out deliberately. Remember, there was one doctor who went against the grain and thought MMR caused autism? What happened? He ran off to America before he could be struck off and his "research" was found to be flawed, fixed and wrong. |

I am certainly not taking this as an excuse to load up on saturated fats. In fact I think that there is plenty of evidence to say that unsaturated fats are better for you. I do think that one week we get a warning against coffee or eggs and then some time later we get an all clear. So the public gets confused. My switch to butter some time ago was because of the lack of processing and I am gradually reducing my intake of any processed foods and all the e numbers that they come with. I am still eating no more than average in terms of fats. |

so I've done a bit more reading about this particular registrar and it seems like he's trying to get himself noticed by making controversial statements. He argues against stents for stable angina and yet the cause of stable angina is narrowed arteries that could potentially lead to heart attacks. He airs his views to the media on things like diabetes and diet. He very much sounds like someone trying to climb the greasy pole and brown-nose as many people as possible. |

I think stents are very useful and personally I think heart pumps should be used a lot earlier to allow heart muscle to recover, rather than waiting till the patient is on a huge drug load. If we are to have a better diet I think lower calorie intake and more exercise should be the priority with moderation in what you sort of foods you eat. |
