That would be a bit embarrassing if people actually realised that at election time. |

Well, no, but they have effectively removed the prime source for any major speeches made by those in power. Come the next election, those speeches (especially those making pre election promises) should be scrutinised and those making them brought to book on any premise not kept, or reneged on. |

But Pre-" everything on the WEB" they would just have been in folders gathering dust in thier vaults and no one would have had a copy unless they kept one. Dont forget that all news outlets get copies of all the major speeches well before they are given so they can prep for thier reporting so there will still be loads of copies out there |

People have been making such a noise about this, and will no doubt go to greater measures to seek out speeches, find the bits that were reneged on and will have two attack vectors: 1) You said this but did that, and b) You tried to hide what you said. |

The tiny number of people who wish to do that probably know to use professional tools such as LexisNexis to access these types of archive. Few if any would use the web site. All that was lost would have been advanced google searches, which can be better than LN searches. Or of course they would have gone here http://www.britishpoliticalspeech.org/s ... ngeTo=2007 This is a stupid story, anyone who would spend more time shouting about what a massive assault it is against democracy rather than simply googling for alternative archives is obviously not qualified to have an opinion on subjects relating to basic research. |

Would you not agree, though, the the first post of call for the text of a speech would be the organisation from where that speech would have originated, especially if an archive was known to be there? It would be better to quote the primary source (so-and-so’s speech, text here on the Conservative web site), and the URL for that, rather than referencing a third party? |

No, they are also published, it is far better to quote that resource even if you initiated your search on the web. If you go through LN you even get a nice button to hit for Harvard referencing. If you reference web link in an academic paper, one is pretty much like any other. Incidentally
That's not how I understand the phrase primary source. I was taught that if Thucydides had been present at Pericles' Funeral Oration, and therefore had reported the actual speech rather than making it up, he would be a primary source. Other web sites which re-publish transcripts are not secondary sources. http://www.princeton.edu/~refdesk/primary2.html |

the conservatives and labour removing speeches and having to find other sources reminds me of something out of HHGTTG ...
