Not really a surprise - with the loss of Fukushima and (one assumes) the Japanese public unlikely to accept new nuclear reactors being built any time soon, the only way they can bridge the energy gap in anything like reasonable time is with fossil fuel power stations.

They are building windmills off Fukushima so that might help to some extent.

Isn't now the time to be investing in Thorium reactors which fail safe rather than exploding?

I am pro renewables but we also need to cut energy use as well. Thorium would certainly help.
