Leading search engine companies Google and Microsoft have agreed measures to make it harder to find child abuse images online.

As many as 100,000 search terms will now return no results that find illegal material, and will trigger warnings that child abuse imagery is illegal.

PM David Cameron has welcomed the move but said it must be delivered or he would bring forward new legislation.

True. Hard core sickos will use Tor or something similar. I guess the idea is to help stop the people who are 'just starting out' (as it were) from getting their foot in the door.

They also need to make it easier to report.

What did you used to get when you googled "where can i find child porn?"
Personally I was never curious to find that out. But those who are presumably start somewhere.

You mean block the gateway? Surely it would be more productive for an explicit search term to a) carry a warning, and b) link to a honey trap? Now that would be something worth reporting.

Given the torrent indexing sites are held responsible for providing access to illegal material, I would expect Google and Bing et al to block those images by default; purely to protect themselves from litigation. This isn't the blow against child abuse the government will want to claim it is.

"where can i find child porn?" is not "show me child porn"

I await the inevitable 'dodgy' album covers and 'You blocked my legitimate blog!' issues

Yeah, because google's image index would distinguish between those two search terms.

David Cameron: GCHQ will be brought in to tackle child abuse images

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2 ... use-images

They're supposed to be doing that anyway, apparently

You miss my point. People who don't know how to find child porn might search Google for pictures or they might search for instructions for how to find them via some other resource.
Those instructions would be in the form of words, not pictures.
