Post subject:  Exploding Battery? It's by design

According to Apple, batteries in laptops are supposed to explode, destroying your laptop in the process, once they reach an "optimistic" 1 year life. :shock:

Obviously Acer didn't get the memo, because my 2003 Acer laptop battery is still running fine.

I've never even had knock-off batteries explode with years of use.

I've seen a few here, both Apple and dodgy Chinese clones.
I've had AA Duracell batteries leak after being sat on a shelf for a year.
Slight non-story, IMHO.

saying a component exploding after only a year is expected behaviour is not a non-story it's taking the piss out of your customers.

Agreed, while it might suit Apple to get people to buy a new device every year it would be a short term solution as people would switch to a more stable device.

They've phrased it poorly, I'd agree, but saying that her battery 'exploded' is slightly taking the piss too. It was still apparently holding a charge, so can we claim it as the worlds first explosion proof battery? Keeps on ticking even after 'exploding'?
It shouldn't be described as expected behaviour, but laptop batteries going pop isn't news.
The way some employee (was it in store or on the end of a help line?) has gone on to describe it is the poor bit.

I've never had a battery on a laptop explode, I've had one mobile phone battery swell up, and that was an 8 year old phone. Most of the laptops I've had have had a battery last for the best part of a decade without exploding.

Maybe it was a single employee that said that, although it read more like an official policy. Either way , it is a poor show.

On of the dev iPhones (3g or 3gs) blew soon after I started, almost took the metal back clean off in the process and completely warped it from the heat

Those models of iPhones had plastic backs.

Iirc there was metal underneath it between the battery and case or the battery and mainboard, not talking about the case itself

Until very recently I never had one either. My first iPhone 5 battery failed 33 days after the warranty. Though it was covered under a battery recall, so I was not out of pocket. Though I was not happy at the time.
