The Tube is remarkably safe. Though as an occasional tourist the cost of tube fares is ridiculous. |

I've always considered that the cost of public transport in London is actually pretty good compared to other cities. If you make a lot of single journeys and buy a new ticket each time you're undeniably correct but that would be a bonkers way to approach the situation, especially if you're arriving in the capitol by train (from memory it costs about £6 extra to add an all day travel card to the train ticket). Gets a bit more complicated for a multi-day visit but then you might as well just get an Oyster card. As for the article itself, I'm somewhat perplexed as to how having no ticket offices would affect safety, especially if the staff from those offices are being redeployed onto platform and station customer service roles. I'm not quite clear how Boris thinks they'll be able to cut the number of train drivers though especially if he wants to actually run more trains overall. Is he proposing having automated trains run entirely via the signalling system? |

+1 Even with the hefty rise in fares over the last few years it's still much better than most places. |

Yes the idea is to have unmanned trains (like the DLR and like they do in Paris and many other metros / undergrounds) |

I didn't realise the DLR was driverless. Hmm, I can't see the RMT taking this very well. |

I can't see most existing tube lines going driverless. The cost and hassle of upgrading a line already in use would be immense. Not to mention the delays etc while the work was being done. I'm surprised they didn't consider it for crossrail etc though. |

The Victoria, Jubilee Central line (and Northern line when they finish the current upgrade) could all run driverless |

It does make a lot of sense for commuters. It could make collection of goods much easier for those that live in London especially if you go past it every day. It is not such a great idea for people like me who might want to pay for travel with a chip and signature card. |
