I suspect most people didn't vote because they either didn't know or particularly care about the election, certainly that was the impression I had at the time.

I certainly thought that it was going to be a waste of time and money and very few candidates actually published any leaflets about what they were trying to achieve. It was simply a matter of picking whom ever the parties had already preselected.
