A diplodocus skeleton has been sold at auction for £400,000 ($652,000).

The 17m-long (56ft) dinosaur was found in a quarry in Wyoming, US, and then assembled in Rotterdam. It is thought to be one of only six relatively complete specimens in the world.

An undisclosed institution bought the skeleton, which auction officials said would be going on public display.

I wish I had £400,000 to throw at a dinosaur skeleton. Well, probably £500,000 as I’d need to get it from the site to somewhere else and store it while I negotiate with the NHM in London about loaning it to them, and ensuring it keeps their fake skeleton company in the main hall.

Me too! An 2 metre long ichthyosaur fossil recently went to auction and I'd have loved that.

That is dirt cheap. There was a T-Rex that was seized by the US tax authorities that went for several million.

A 'raptor skeleton would be cool.

While like many others I would love one, but a reproduction would suit me just as well as long as the original was in a public museum.
