Lidl discount supermarket plans to double UK stores

Quote:
Lidl, the German discount supermarket chain, is planning to double the number of stores it has in the UK.

Lidl wants to expand from 600 stores to as many as 1,500, UK managing director Ronny Gottschlich told the Sunday Telegraph.

Lidl is planning to open at least 30 new stores a year, he said.

The retailer's sales have been increasing, in contrast to big supermarkets such as Tesco.

"We really see ourselves these days more of a supermarket than the hard discounter of the past," Mr Gottschlich said. "Those times are over."

I suspect that Aldi will be doing the same and expanding. My parents love Aldi and are regulars at Lidl as well. The only thing that they find annoying is once you have found something that you like there are no guarantees it will be there in a few weeks.

The staples are usually always there. The offers change in a weekly basis, at least over here.
The biggest problem with Aldi is the very limited range of products and only own brand goods. We usually do a round of Aldi or Lidl for the staples and then go to Famila or Rewe for the rest.

I prefer Aldi to Lidl, however i'd be happy if one opened near my house :D
In France they also go to local factories and get all the branded stuff directly from the area :)

I am not that worried about the own brands. I find most of them pretty good. In fact I have little in the way of branded goods in my shopping basket. Most is own brand or unbranded items like vegetables.
