Apart from anything else, it must be costing Google a lot of money in terms of their cut and traffic!

It is the morons running the companies again. They fail to appreciate that this is their customers way of showing their support for the game. It might be a video of a part of the game but nothing that could not be considered fair rights in most cases.

Apparently it's not quite that simple

I'm not entirely up to speed with what has happened here, but from what I have gathered videos are not being removed: what is being removed is the uploaders rights to monetise Let's Play videos, which makes sense if you think about it from an IP standpoint. The above video was posted by a prolific GMod/Source FilmMaker user and does a pretty good job of explaining what's going on.

He does make a very good point about switching to a mode where they support more independent developers. The big developers might actually find sales fall if people cannot get an idea of a game on Youtube rather than the unrealistic game play shown in promotional videos.

Not so. From the article:

Quote:
However, many of the copyright owners have not asked for these changes to happen, and are now beginning to help users restore their business.

and

Quote:
Now a rising number of games companies, such as World of Warcraft developer Blizzard Entertainment, are offering help to those affected.

A representative for Blizzard, writing on the Starcraft 2 Twitter account page, has asked YouTube users affected to contest all copyright claims "so we can quickly approve them". Meanwhile, Maurice Tan, the international community manager for publisher Deep Silver, has told his Twitter followers to make contact if their videos have been affected.

and so on...

I have a video on YouTube that’s had a claim against it. It was uploaded by the game The Movies, and included a soundtrack that the game put in. As far as I am aware, the game brings with it the rights to use the music online. However, a rights company has claimed the music as theirs and is citing copyright infringement. Personally, the video is pretty crap, so I removed it (I uploaded it when I first got the game as I thought it was a bit of fun). It’s not just me, and it seems that this kind of thing is happening here.

Ubisoft said this (again quoted in the article):
Quote:
If you happen to be hit with claims on any of your Ubisoft content, it may be that some of the audio is being auto-matched against the music catalogue on our digital stores - it might show up as being claimed by our distributor 'idol'. In such cases please take the following steps and we can get it cleared for you.

Now you could argue that, unlike The Movies, most games have not licensed music for video broadcast on sites like YouTube, so uploading them should not be allowed. However, we’re in a grey area now, and the PS4’s share button will nay blur these boundaries further.

The music element I can fully appreciate and understand. Maybe the developers should buy online music rights in association with their games?

From that it looks like the Music lobbying was the cause. In future strip out all music so that is not the issue. Though who in their right mind would watch a person playing a game of Grand Theft Auto for the music. That might be an extra but not the reason for actually viewing the clip in the first place.
