I like Vince, but that argument is self defeating. Putting up interest rates because prices in some London post codes are so high that only the rich can afford them makes houses more difficult to buy. So still only the rich can afford the houses in the expensive areas.

The prices of houses across the country are a useful economic indicator. The prices of houses in a few select areas that behave differently to the rest of the market aren't. It makes no sense to mess with a nationwide economic policy on the basis of this "problem" as those areas are inflated by a different logic to the rest of the country, and so are probably the least affected by both interest rates and help to buy, making this attitude to those tools a bit pointless.

Mr Cable talked of a "raging housing boom" in London and the South-East.

Not around here. Dozens of million pound homes but they have been on the market for months. There are lots of high cost £600,000 flats being built as well. Lots of interest from out of towners but nothing local.

Aren't you holed up in one of those dying seaside resorts for the criminally elderly?
