How do gay people 'imperil' the Pope's security? Just because they're gay doesn't mean they want to rape the pope (or people in general).

I think the commandant was worried about external blackmail or his guards getting involved in the conspiracies that crop up in the Vatican.

I was not thinking of any linkage between the stories, but more of a general crisis in the Vatican.
