• NSA extracts location, contacts and financial transactions
• 'Dishfire' program sweeps up 'pretty much everything it can'
• GCHQ using database to search metadata from UK numbers

I thought I'd give that it's own thread. Oh, and with it being 2014 now fcuk knows what else they've been collecting. I genuinely have more fear of our own security services and their future actions than I do of terrorism. And I live in Belfast ffs.

Obama presents NSA reforms with plan to end government storage of call data

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/j ... -call-data

Quote:
Mounting a forceful defence of the NSA, Obama said: “They’re not abusing authorities in order to listen to your private phone calls, or read your emails.” He did not mention that judges on the secret surveillance court have found NSA has repeatedly and “systematically” overstepped its bounds. “We cannot unilaterally disarm our intelligence agencies,” Obama said.

No, of course they're not

Quote:
In his widely anticipated address at the Justice Department on the future course of US surveillance policy, Obama said the government should no longer hold databases of every call record made in the United States, citing the “potential for abuse” as the reason for making the change.

See above, and who is he discussing this with?

Quote:
Obama has directed attorney general Eric Holder, NSA director Keith Alexander and the rest of the intelligence community to present proposals over the next several weeks for what private entity should hold Americans’ telephone metadata, casting it as an issue that requires further deliberation before any decision that could have major implications for both privacy and security.

Has there ever been a President or PM who had the balls to tell their security agencies to wind their necks in? I think they secretly like the idea of being just far enough removed but still involved with that sort of power

I suspect that there will be a carefully worded solution that will allow them to carry on regardless.

+1, this is simply to take the sting out of it. As someone said elsewhere, Congress pressure is what will count here.
