Violinist Vanessa Mae is set to ski for Thailand at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, which start next month.
Mae, a keen skier since childhood, has been competing as Vanessa Vanakorn using her father's surname.
She raced four times in Slovenia at the weekend in a last-ditch bid to meet the qualifying standard.

Annoyingly I'm going to be at work for all the Olympics.

Imagine if she goes over during a run and busts a couple of fingers? It's a brave thing to do on her part.

Not being a skier I would not know, but I would not think that pranging her fingers is as likely as having a head jarring tumble. Though she must be of a reasonable standard to be able to represent her country.

Fixed

You don't have to be especially good to represent your country as a token entrant, but top 4000 in the world again isn't that impressive when you consider the number of people that participate in the sport and competing for a token entry was the only way she would be able to enter (and even then has to be up to scratch)

I believe there is a base standard you need to attain to compete, so you do need to be competent. Plus the courses they ski down are tough so you'd be an idiot to try if you weren't up to completing the course in one piece, it's dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Almost certainly, she can ski significantly better than the average holiday skier.

Weren't those rules brought in to stop the Eddie the Eagles entering?

Yes they were. Something about being a self-trained amateur not being good enough.

Which totally scraps the original premise of the Olympics.
