A BBC-by-subscription 'would be richer', MPs told Basically, three different studies we re done into turning the BBC from the licence fee model to a subscription model similar to Sky or VM. All three studies concluded that the BBC would massively increase it's income by doing so, possibly close to doubling it, and in the process sales of other subscription services would presumably fall as that extra £2bn a year has to come from somewhere.. The amazing part is there are millions of people in the UK who would apparently willingly pay three times the current licence fee for the same service. |

I wonder if they'd consider this to not only increase revenue but reduce costs - no more detector vans, roving inspectors or legal battles with non-payers who claim it is an infringement of their rights. Afterall, the BBC is saying you cannot own a TV, or indeed an device capable of displaying broadcast content, unless you buy a licence; regardless of whether you'd watch BBC content. Given that the BBC is state owned, despite the Royal Charter granting content broadcast independence, does it receive all of the licence fee, or is some syphoned off as tax by the government? If there is a portion of tax in there, are we likely to see the TV Licence continue regardless of the BBC's decision on whether or not to go subscription only? I can't see the government passing up an opportunity to levy some tax, despite the additional tax income they'd probably get from the subscription model. Where did I put that tinfoil... |

I don't know, is it? I thought the other channels were funded by selling advertisement space? |

The Beeb plays the ratings game as it is, you could kiss anything they can't put in a boxset goodbye with the argument of 'nobody was watching it anymore'. Yeah, because it had it's budget cut and nobody wanted to go down with it. |

I think some used to go to ITV for religious programs, but they opted to say no to the money so they could have different programs on a Sunday. |

The BBC are also taking money from the production budget to fun the pension pot. Things need to change at the BBC. |

That is happening all over the place to cover final salary schemes. They need to massively increase contributions from all to cover the low rates of return that the funds are getting. |
