Quote:
The total number of US executions has declined from a peak of 98 in 1999 to 39 last year. Some states have turned away from the death penalty entirely; many have cases tied up in court. And those that carry on with executions find them increasingly difficult to conduct because of the scarcity of drugs and doubts about how well they work.

The sensible solution is to change the verdict to life without parole. This would be cheaper and might end the courts being filled with those heading to death row.

Does life without parole actually reduce the number of appeals? Both sentences seem to leave a guy with nothing much to lose. Unless you make death the forfeit for losing an appeal against life without P. But I think there would be grounds to appeal that if you did.

Hanging - its quick, humane (if done correctly) and cheap

Michael Portillo did a program a few years ago on the death penalty. He went through all of the issues with all the current methods (all of which are flawed to some degree) and then mentioned another method which has never been used, namely Inert Gas Asphyxiation. All it requires is to pump the room full of nitrogen (doesn't even need to be sealed off) and the person dies painlessly (actually in a state of euphoria if memory serves) and then all you have to do afterwards is open the window to make the room safe.
