Nazi stag-do Tory MP Aidan Burley to step down

Mr Burley was sacked as a ministerial aide in 2011 after he bought a Nazi uniform for the groom to wear during a trip to a French ski resort.

The MP apologised, but the Tories said his actions had been "unacceptable" and he had caused "deep offence".

Mr Burley will not contest the marginal Cannock Chase seat he won in 2010.

He should have gone in 2011 not wait till the next election.

If he quits he gets nothing, if he's deselected or loses his seat at the election he gets a quite substantial payoff. Not sure what the deal is if he's voluntarily not contesting his seat but stays as MP until that point. Cynicism would suggest there's a financial benefit to him doing it the way he is.

I know that he will get the resettlement allowance which is tens of thousands if he sits it out till the election. If an MP decided to do absolutely nothing after being elected, he could still claim his wages, and wait till the next election and get a decent resettlement allowance even if he was retiring.

I really don't get how job-like it is to be an MP in the UK. The fear of loss of income when you lose the election would stop anyone from taking really ground breaking decisions.
