http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/f ... islabelled Take your pick, next to fcuk all tastes the way it used to or the way it should now. The amount of things recently that have been blatantly loaded with salt to hide cheap ingredients or a different production process is ridiculous. |

I do think that many people are being ripped off by such passing off. If the fines were enormous and could be used to help councils fund further investigations you might actually see some enforcement. Though I have been switching away from anything that is processed if I can and opting for a much simpler diet. Interestingly it has lead to a drop in the cost of my shopping as well. |

And what if you allergic to poultry? You don't really expect to have an allergic reaction to poultry, when you eat beef! And out of date drugs? Not being ripped off? They are being poisoned! |

Ripping the customer off is the least of their crimes. I do agree with you that it could be considered as far worse, but the problem is that Trading Standards are having their budgets cut even though they are an essential service. The fines should be so high that it deters companies from doing it in the first place, secondly it should enable whistleblowers to be paid for out of the fines. If these are large enough for someone to retire on then it might actually start to change corporate behaviour. The biggest problem is that the fines are hardly punitive in fact most of the time they are more of a nuisance and just another overhead. |

Same here. Though I would be more concerned about the fact that most soya is GMO. |

More the fact that they do not label what it is. Most GMO are not actually that much better than conventional crops. In the US and Asia there is increasing Roundup resistance being detected in weeds because of genetic pollution. Also the need to increase even more use of pesticides means that they are already losing the cost benefit advantage over conventional crops. It is a great way for Monsanto to keep demanding fees for copyright infringement after someone stops using their seeds but their new crop gets recontaminated be the weeds and the DNA that they have now absorbed. |
