This followed a whistleblower telling the Observer that £20m of credit balances went into the annual accounts of British Gas in one recent financial year. Other power companies also faced criticism from holding on to credit built up on accounts paid by direct debit.

That probably explains why, for the first time ever, my supplier paid my credit balance back into my account last month; even before I received the statement. I'm willing to bet that the recalculated lower monthly payment will be sufficiently low to accrue a debit balance from now on - that's their usual way of retaining customers.

The big six were not offering decent terms for many people. Though they should be broken up to create more competition.

My current deal runs out in April - will review then

Late last year, my monthly DD was lowered.

I should submit meter readings to see if I am in credit or not.
