That won't do anything. It was half-term last week so pretty much most schools held half term last week. If you allow schools to vary half term by a week either way (as an example), instead of one week of high prices, you will get three weeks of high prices. The only people who win are the travel industry.

For people who are flying short haul (i.e. Europe, the holiday destination for most UK families who fly) APD is a fiver. Five. Pounds. The difference between 'school holiday' and 'not school holiday' prices are often hundreds of pounds. Now I've always been a champion of the 'they're your kids, it's your problem' school but the idea this will make any difference.. well, I'm reminded of a famous select committee conversation...

A few quid off will barely make any difference for most families. A typical family of three or four will probably still be hit more by the higher accommodation charges during the run up to holidays rather than they could save by this tax break. The best way to help families is to abandon the ban on taking kids out of school. So they can travel off peak. Allow kids to catch up.

Allow kids to catch up? How? Who will be responsible?

I am firmly in the camp of if you cant afford the holiday during the defined holiday times then tough. Dont go on holiday. Its not a god given right. save up and go when you can afford it.
Will my wife then be allowed to take time off when she chooses so we xan save some money...er That would be a no.

I have never had a holiday abroad with me parents. We used to drive 12 hrs to the South of France in the Summer and never went to the seaside and prices were reasonable.

Foreign holidays can also be beneficial in other ways for children. Also the price difference from being in the UK compared to abroad is minimal anyway, particularly if you pick a package holiday.
