There was a lot of 'em about in the 1920s. Not just here in Essex.

 | | | | Wikipedia wrote: The swastika is a symbol that generally takes the form of an equilateral cross, with its four arms bent at 90 degrees. The earliest archaeological evidence of swastika-shaped ornaments dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization as well as the Mediterranean Classical Antiquity and paleolithic Europe. Swastikas have also been used in various other ancient civilizations around the world including Turkic, India, Iran, Nepal, China, Japan, Korea and Europe. It remains widely used in Indian religions, specifically in Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism, primarily as a tantric symbol that invokes Lakshmi - the Vedic goddess of wealth, prosperity and auspiciousness. | | | | |
It is all in the interpretation... Just because a symbol was misused by one group, doesn't mean it is evil or loses its original meanings.

Am I right in thinking that Hitler reversed the direction of the original peaceful religious symbol?

It is a symbol for good luck. Though it has been used for millennia.

Interior shot of the Amiens Cathedral (tallest Gothic cathedral in the world, built in 1220, I recommend stopping there if anyone is driving from Calais to Paris) It's in the middle of the Somme battlefields and survived both wars undamaged. It was saved from destruction during WWII because of the Swastika on the floor, as it was earmarked to provide metal for German armies. It's not good to try to rewrite history with modern eyes and sanitise everything to match current views.

Pondering a FOI request to Essex County Council to see how many complaints about these there have been since 1939, and their outcomes. Any suggestions on wording I should use? I would expect a high number of complaints between 1939 and 1945, with a tail off over the years. The fact that no enterprising soul with a ladder and chisel attempted amendments during WWII or shortly after makes me think that no one was really that bothered. In this light, I am expecting a very small number of complaints, possibly more since far right parties started to become more conspicuous. [EDIT] Here’s my draft request. Is this comprehensive enough? | | | | Quote: To: Essex County Council and Chelmsford City Council This is a Freedom of Information Act Request. Please treat it as such. I am writing to enquire about the number of complaints about the swastika emblems that can be found on the Chelmsford's County Hall, Threadneedle Street, in Chelmsford, Essex (English Heritage listing: http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/res ... =mapsearch). Specifically, I would like the following information: 1 - The number of complaints since the start of hostile action in World War II (generally held to be 1st September 1939) 2 - The nature and content of each complaint - a summary should suffice (I am not in need of copies of roiginal documents at this time), but I would like to know the reason for the complaint and what remedial action was requested by the complainant. 3 - The outcome of the complaint - was it investigated? What were the findings and recommendations made to resolve the issue? Please email your response to: Thank you. | | | | |
