There was a lot of 'em about in the 1920s. Not just here in Essex. |

It is all in the interpretation... Just because a symbol was misused by one group, doesn't mean it is evil or loses its original meanings. |

Am I right in thinking that Hitler reversed the direction of the original peaceful religious symbol? |

It is a symbol for good luck. Though it has been used for millennia. |

![]() Interior shot of the Amiens Cathedral (tallest Gothic cathedral in the world, built in 1220, I recommend stopping there if anyone is driving from Calais to Paris) It's in the middle of the Somme battlefields and survived both wars undamaged. It was saved from destruction during WWII because of the Swastika on the floor, as it was earmarked to provide metal for German armies. It's not good to try to rewrite history with modern eyes and sanitise everything to match current views. |

Pondering a FOI request to Essex County Council to see how many complaints about these there have been since 1939, and their outcomes. Any suggestions on wording I should use? I would expect a high number of complaints between 1939 and 1945, with a tail off over the years. The fact that no enterprising soul with a ladder and chisel attempted amendments during WWII or shortly after makes me think that no one was really that bothered. In this light, I am expecting a very small number of complaints, possibly more since far right parties started to become more conspicuous. [EDIT] Here’s my draft request. Is this comprehensive enough?
