Labour stalwart Tony Benn dies at 88

A very rare thing in politics, a man who was prepared to stand by his principles through thick and thin. Not that a lot of his principles were right but I don't think even his most waspish political opponent would argue against the fact that what Tony Benn said, Tony Benn actually believed.

The one thing I probably did agree with him on was his view on the ideas that the government should be scrutinised constantly, that power and authority are a privilege, not a right. I committed to memory his thoughts on this issue..

Quote:
Ask the powerful five questions
    What power have you got?
where did you get it from?
In whose interests do you exercise it?
    To whom are you accountable?
How can we get rid of you?

Not that I agree with much of his politics, but I've got more respect for him that most politicians. He actually argued his point properly.

He also was more honest than most. You know where you stood with him. Too good for cabinet.
