Wouldn't surprise me. There definitely needs to be more of a state role, maybe in the form of a visible commissioner with a proper complaints process. There's too many instances of 'playing god' one way or another in these places. |

Social workers regularly try and get people sectioned. It is unwritten policy. It transfers responsibility to the NHS. |

Personal experience. They tried to have me sectioned 5 times. Every time I saw the psychiatrist they were appalled by my treatment at the hands of social services and said that I was perfectly normal and that my reactions were normal. In fact they even went as far as saying they could not even understand why they thought I was sectionable. Also an ex social worker told me the same thing. They prefer to dump people on the NHS as it will be their budget that becomes liable not social services budget. They even suggested I might be an Aspberger sufferer. Even my MP who knew me very well could see that I was not. |

So what you mean is:
That's surely a different matter entirely. Your having had some bad experiences with some social workers in a certain place means neither that social workers make it a personal habit to try to ram clients into the funny farm nor that your experience is repeated around the country. |

I was not alone. One ex social workers said that the system changes people. They enter with good intentions. They get ground down because they are not allowed to spend money and help people and eventually those wanting to help leave disillusioned and join charities. The opinion of one ex social worker is that many have problems of their own and can hide in the department. It was her who told me that it was positively encouraged to find mental problems so they can refer them and becomes an NHS problem. Also this was the experience of another council so not one rogue department or my problems with a team. |
