I'm guessing 'rogue pilot' like the Egypt Air flight 990.
If someone tried to hijack it, the cockpit door should have provided enough time for the pilot to radio a mayday or squawk the appropriate code on the transponder.
It can't have been a bomb given it flew for hours after vanishing. It's unlikely to have been a pressurisation issue as the autopilot would have continued to China. If there was an explosive decompression that massively affected flight controls and took out the radios etc, why were they able to fly so far without getting to an airport.

There are reports Air Malasia had a more, erm, relaxed approach to the cockpit door security. There are photos that show they used to let selected passengers into the cockpit like the good old days!

I also heard a report that a few of the passengers worked for a company that develops technology that can knock out airline communications remotely.

If it was a political hijack, they'd have had a ransom demand by now surely. Unless they have and just kept it quiet.

Didn't know about the gold bullion but that adds to the conspiracy theories. Much more to this than we're being told.

I just hope one of these scenarios means the passengers are still alive... somewhere.

im inclined to believe the first report that an oil rig worker saw a plane in flames coming down soon after the 777 disappeared from radar
all the rest seems to be FUD ...

The only problem with that surely is that if they had a known sighting and general locus the search shouldn't have taken this long. Even if the whole thing sank quickly without somehow leaving debris on the surface the number of boats with sonar in the area should have made short work of finding the wreck.
Reasons for suppressing the location are all heading into tinfoil hat territory, although admittedly as things stand at the moment it's looking like the 'hat brigade might have a point.

aircraft transponders give no identifying information other then an aircraft is within the contact range of the responders
to all intents and purposes its a 'ping'

any aircraft known or unknown will give out (can give out) transponder signals the only trouble is no individual aircraft ID ...

i am still inclined to focus on the first sighting of the oil rig worker that stated they saw an aircraft in flames coming down
the rest afterwards seems to cloud the issue (FUD) of the doomed aircraft ...

Plus the primary radar suggests if flew the opposite way to that oil rig.

There are only so many places you can land an airliner. You can't just drop it into a field. If someone decided to steal an airliner and all it's passengers there are are only two relevant questions

1) Why?
2) Assuming someone did, why then keep utterly quiet about it?

If you're not bothered about it taking off again you probably could if it was about 3km long.
Plenty of older planes could be equiped with gravel kits to land on unpaved runways. eg 737-200 Tu-154.
Though to my knowledge, no plane the size of a 777 has ever been kitted out like that. That wouldn't stop it landing safely if the ground was firm enough.
