It's not just there. Aren't the government reducing the M1 speed limit to 60 near Sheffield, citing polution as the reason?

I don't honestly see how reducing speed is going to make that much difference. The difference in pollution output of any given modern engine going at 60 rather than 70 isn't actually all that great. Unless the air pollution is just slightly worse than what you're tolerant of, it's a waste of time.

It won't make a difference. They just want to be seen to be doing something.

Italy has been the same for years. Cars without EU4 rating or better have 'odd' and 'even' days, if you have a registration ending with an odd number, you can only drive the car on odd days and vice versa.

I know many Italian families deliberately get the second family car registered with the 'other' plate, so that they can drive every day.

Quote:
According to studies backed by the department of energy, the average car will be at its advertised MPG at 55 mph. But as the speed increases:

- 3% less efficient at 60 mph
- 8% less efficient at 65 mph
- 17% less efficient at 70 mph

so it is a reasonable amount
