Last time we had a redundancy scheme at our place, the rule was you couldn't be re-employed by the university within three years. Three years and a day later, several familiar faces re-appeared.

When I was at Plessey, they made a programmer with 20 years experience redundant, only to realize he was the only person with any knowledge of around 20 different legacy systems.
He came back the following week as a consultant and kept his payoff.
