And inaccurate, there was never a 64-bit Starter edition!

Oh well I was always going to do a custom install as
- Have XP so no choice - Nice to clear out the “trash” / applications you have never used that accumulates over the years - Will get a new HDD to install on ( probably a 1TB model) and use my old ones as backup

Why is that ridiculous? That's exactly what I would have expected, although I'd always do a fresh install if possible. It's obvious you can't "upgrade" from 64 bit to 32 bit, or from a Domain enabled product to a non-domain enabled product. You can only do an in-place upgrade to the matching product, or to Ultimate. Anything else would obviously go tits up - think of the installed applications

Why can you upgrade from Vista home or pro to 7 pro??? That seems odd to me, especially when you can upgrade to the Ultimate version from those products.

You can't In the same way you can't upgrade from XP home to XP pro, or from Vista Home to Vista Business.

I meant to type can't! Why is it, exactly, that you can upgrade from home or pro to ultimate, but you can't upgrade from home or pro to pro.
