Or it could just be that given a chance to avoid a wedding a lot of people will - I'm not even going to my sister's wedding ffs

What a grumpy bunch.
I wanna go to a wedding! (why keep saying "gay" wedding? Surely it's just a wedding.)

So 22% would turn it down. That means 78% would happily attend.

I am really wondering if gay people refer to the weddings they get invited to as 'straight weddings'.

Given the choice, I'd rather not attend any weddings. Pretending to be happy for someone for that length of time is tiring.

Of course, the idea of choice is a novel one. If SWMBO says we're going, it's simply not worth the cost of refusing to go.

TBH, if your'e not actually happy that the couple are getting married, you probably shouldn't bother. And to be honest, if they don't know you well enough that you would automatically be happy for them, they shouldn't have bothered inviting you. I hate people who have big weddings that are basically full of people who don't actually give a crap for the bride and groom and are just there for the free food and drink but who have been invited because someone decided they needed a certain number of guests to salve their ego.

The whole 'public display' thing I have a real problem with in some cases. It's like 'Who are you really doing this for?'.

Who said anything about not giving a crap for the bride and groom? It is perfectly possible to care for another couple whilst hating the cermonial mugging and grinning for the camera. I can be quite happy for them to tie the knot, just less happy about having to attend a pointless ceremony and pretending it matters.

I agree, but you're actually conflating two things I said. I was saying I've been to weddings full of people who didn't give a crap and hated them (the ceremony that is, not the couple), not that you didn't give a crap. In my case at least if I was happy they were doing it, I'd be happy to be there. Or at least, I'd put up with the rest of the crap because I'd want to be there.

My opinion on marriage as an institution isn't that positive to be honest; I know I'm a bit bitter but if you had my history, you might be the same. In respect to the people I know who have happy marriages, I try not to gripe too loudly. I still think though that if some of my friends are doing something that makes them happy, I'd be happy to share it with them, even if it wasn't something I'd do of my own choice.

Thank goodness someone got there before me.
There is totally no need to keep appending the word gay to this act.
