Post subject:  Britain is 'post-Christian' - former Archbishop

Quote:
Britain is now a "post-Christian" country, former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has said.

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph, Lord Williams said Britain was not a nation of believers and that the era of widespread worship was over.

Quote:
Lord Williams, who retired from being the leader of the Church of England in 2012, said: "If I say that this is a post-Christian nation, that doesn't mean necessarily non-Christian.

"It means the cultural memory is still quite strongly Christian."

I think the cultural memory part is quite a valid observation. A lot of what we do is indeed influenced by the country’s Christian past. However, as a friend of mine once said to me, it’s just a habit these days - things we do we do because they are familiar to us.

I think his description is the most accurate in the recent debate.

+1. I was reading an article yesterday and the writer mentioned that even at Easter there were only 20-odd people at the service. If you can't draw people in at Easter...

The world has totally changed and the churches continue to hold on by their fingertips. Women rightfully wanting full participation in all aspects of life, the same with minority groups, child sexual abuse/denial that now can't be swept under the carpet, declining marriage rates except amongst the people the churches don't like (!), people living longer, the internet and globalization making the world a much smaller place... good luck trying to get people to care about the invisible man in that climate.
