Supposedly it stops kids starting, but I'm not sure how you would prove that either way.

Devil's advocate, I can't help thinking there's an argument for giving alcohol plain packaging if there's one for smoking

I can't see packaging changes making any difference.
I never smoked, but a lot of my friends did. I never heard any of them say 'how cool' the packaging was.
