Revenue raiser and has the potential for avoiding handing down actual sentences, rightly or wrongly* :|

* I imagine it'll only really be used to make examples of people once in a blue moon.

I was toying with the idea that fines should be proportional to income. Taking £100 from a pensioner is a lot more of a hit than from a high flying banker.

Over here they are moving towards proportional fines.

Also, for more than 40km/h over the limit you get an automatic ban, ranging from 1 to 3 months, for serious offences 6 months to a year.

Good. Some fines are currently too small to be a deterrent. Saves them having to be sent up to the crown courts.

I should have said that the ban is in addition to points and a fine. If you are on the borderline I'd losing your piece license you could end up with a three month ban for showing followed up with 1-3 years back for having to many points on the license.
