http://www.theguardian.com/politics/201 ... ry-optionsKnow who could have sorted them out? That loony you went to war against. The same sort of loony who always winds up in charge no matter what we do.

It's interesting. The west took the (depending on your opinion) moral high ground an intervened against Hussain and Assad. That loosened their grip on power allowing the extremists to move in to take advantage, thus giving the west more problems. People understandably don't like dictators, but they do offer the advantage of controlling the nutters. If the west had only gone into Afghanistan and not into Iraq, and hadn't given Syrian rebels air support, would the middle east be as unstable as it is? I doubt it.

When did we give air support to Syrian rebels? We didn't do [LIFTED] to loosen Assad's grip on power.
What he did though was release all of his islamic nutters from jail to join ISIS; and then not target ISIS as heavily as he did the more secular opposition, ensuring that this would be the result.
We have been played, over and over again.

Didn't we enforce a no fly zone over rebel territory and areas of fighting?

No, we talked about it, but what we did was diddly squat. There was probably more discussion about it on this forum than in the corridors of power.

Talking is preferable to bombing.

Pot, meet kettle: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-27864603The idea of Boris describing anything as "unhinged" seems quite bonkers given his track record, but in this case, he's making more sense than Blair.
