In other words Labour think it is a good idea in principle, but wants to be seen to oppose it in the short term as it's unpopular.

They have already stated they "believe in the principle of universal credit", but they're looking to maximise the political capital they can reap from a visibly broken system.

If they get in at the next election, expect to hear them crowing about how they stopped and fixed the flawed system put in place by the ConDems; almost as much as Cameron did about Labour being responsible for the sh!t state of Britain's economy, every time he got button-holed about the inefficacy of the government's recovery programme.

Same sh!t, ever-so-slightly different colour.
