I read somewhere else that this used to be de rigeur post 9/11, and for some reason, since then, the rules have been relaxed.

Over 25 years ago I can remember my mum showing security staff that her walkman was in full working condition. ie. to remove and replace the cells and cassette, and then to show it playing a cassette. Now that would have been not too long after Lockerbie.
Now if you really want to stop people boarding with intent to blow up or hijack an aeroplane, then insist on them eating a bacon sandwich before embarkation. No bacon no flight.
That was a joke before anyone comes across all offended.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Utterly, utterly pointless.

Airlines issuing e-tickets/boarding passes would partially solve the delays caused at the boarding gates relating to this issue. Pluss, y'know, good for the environment too.

We've had our electronics checked like that going offshore for years.

Quite a lot of the time when going through airports with my camera gear, I have had to remove each item from the bag and they have had to be swabbed. No idea what the swab does or is intended to do, but I've never had to power the camera on before. And that wasn't even travelling to the U.S.

Swabbing is normally performed to detect trace amounts of explosive compounds, or their precursours. I and my belongings have been swabbed many times in Australian airports; Cairns, Brisbane and Sydney as examples, but never in any other country.

On my only trip to the USA, which was very post 9/11, we just put our kit through the x-rays. No need to switch them on. The US people seemed more interested in my asthma inhaler than the Newton, PowerBook and cameras.

Yeah, my laptop used to get swabbed for explosives every time I went through Eastmidlands Airport. Interestingly, since they opened the new security building a couple of months ago, they haven't done that. I wonder if their new x-ray machines are better at picking that sort of thing up.
