The security breach resulted in around three weeks of network downtime. Sony subsequently offered a Welcome Back package in which players could receive two free PS3 games, two free PSP games and a period of free PlayStation Plus membership.

However, some felt this wasn't enough and a North American class action lawsuit was filed against the platform holder. Three years later, Polygon reports that Sony has reached a settlement in which a further $15 million of free content will be offered to PlayStation owners.

The settlement has yet to be approved by a judge but if it is the content will be distributed in the following way:

Those who had a PSN account in 2011 and did not claim the Welcome Back pack will be able to choose two of the following options: one PS3 or PSP game from a choice of fourteen, three PS3 themes from a choice of six, three months subscription to PS Plus.

They will also be able to choose the same option twice: for example, two free games or two three-month PS Plus subscriptions. This will continue until Sony has given out $6 million of content.

Those who did claim the Welcome Back pack will be able to choose one of the above options.

In addition, anyone who had a Qriocity account at the time is eligible to a free month of Music Unlimited, while customers of SOE games are entitled to $4.50 of free Station Cash.

I wonder would Sony deny that to their European customers... It's a mad settlement offer either way :o

It's pretty much exactly the same deal as Sony gave to their European customers just after they brought PSN back online. Go look it up. It's the US that is years behind in this case.

I remember it well (I'd never used PSN so much!), it was this bit that made me wonder

I imagine the games won't be up to much either way.
