We're moving towards Google's stuff at work, and I'm really not a big fan at all. I trust them less than I trusted MS in the 90s. |

I know it's trendy to hate them but we went over to Google apps last year and it has improved the way we work. Just live sharing of a document in Google drive alone has cut out a lot of crap, and I prefer gmail (despite it's limitations) for it's search functionality; mind you, we were saddled with Lotus Notes prior to that so a burning bag sh!te would have been an improvement to be honest. |

How does that compare to collaborating on documents in office using SharePoint? One of the main reasons for SharePoint is to enable collaboration on documents. As to using Google, given the current legal wrangles in the USA, it could become moot. If the US government wins it will essentially outlaw the use of any clouds service with ties to America. Our problem was there wasn't a software standard throughout the company. People had different versions of office installed and collaboration resulted in people emailing copies of files to each other, and finding out they couldn't correctly read some files because the author was lucky enough to be running the latest version of Excel. Whether or not it was more cost effective to standardise the office suites used throughout the UK business and run SharePoint, I'll never know, but it's vastly more efficient now.
I doubt that'll happen - money talks. More so in America than anywhere else. |

Our problem is the insistence on rolling out tech where it's not needed. For instance: Management were encouraging the students to use their devices to log into the intranet and cast votes on topics in the classroom, in order that we could then compile them and feedback to the class in some form of chart or graph. Thankfully the newest member of staff pointed out that 'Wouldn't it be quicker and easier just to get them to raise a hand and write it down?' Tech everywhere doesn't equate to efficiency savings. |

Probably the only comparison you're going to get to make is that one of them is free and the other one isn't.
Quite so inside the EU. Safe harbour my arse. |
