http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-28896675I hope there's a lot more to that story. He's patently a d1ckhead, but 33 months for piracy is an abuse of the justice sytem in terms of wider society, not using it for good. Rapists don't get sentences like that ffs.

Wasn't that one of the jokes about piracy? You get less punishment for raping someone than pirating. The punishment needs to be proportional to the crime.

Allegedly he was selling those 700,000 copies for 1.50 a pop... http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/08/23 ... 33_months/<quote>Danks used Facebook to sell copies of the film for £1.50 a pop. He also attempted to flog other movies such as Iron Man 3.</quote>

It states it was downloaded 700k times though, not that he sold that many.
Wouldn't make any difference IMO in terms of the sentence he got - he didn't cause anyone physical or mental harm. His punishment and the cost of it doesn't fit the crime IMO.
And the 'he's cost us millions' defence is absolute bollocks. As if all those thousands of people were actually gonna go to the cinema. Scaremongering like that was shown to be nonsense even as recently as the release of Expendables 3, where despite net headlines that a screener copy was online, people weren't downloading it and the film only reached number 5 in the American chart.
You can't talk about dangers to society when the system is so broken that a movie pirate is sent into a dangerously overcrowded prison population with a longer sentence than the average paedo.

but the average paedo is protected by the system, from the very top down to its lowest level
pirating films takes money from those/these at the top, therefore a prison sentence
the top have their own priorities, we at the bottom just have to live with it ...
