The recorder was probably the first musical instrument I learnt in school at the age of 5. I was then also enrolled into guitar lessons but this clashed with recorder lessons. In the end, I had stopped both by age 8, probably down to school issues.

Music was almost non-existent at both my schools.

Recorder and guitar, although I was never proficient with either. I taught myself a bit of piano and organ, but again not to a high standard.

Had keyboard/(electric) organ lessons for a few years while I was a school but not actually through school. As a scientist I happily dropped all the arts subjects at the earliest possible opportunity and never really looked back.

There is no worse sound on earth than a child learning the recorder.
Vive la France!
I learned the recorder (briefly), violin (very briefly) and accordion, though that was in my own time.

I like the recorder - it's a good basic instrument to learn reading notation. I have a few around the house - even today, I've been known to have a play every now and then. The weirdest instrument I used to learn was the melodica. I used to play the trumpet for a while at school it think it helped my asthma. The only problem with school music (certainly ay my school) was that everything was geared towards populating the orchestra, so if you learned an instrument, it was always going to be classical. Thankfully, my trumpet teacher saw fit to get me playing more jazz music, but guitar and violin (which I was also learning) was purely classical.
