Apple is now offering app-specific passwords for third-party apps that access iCloud, allowing users to generate unique one-time use passwords to sign into iCloud securely. In a support document, Apple describes app-specific passwords as a feature of two-step verification and states that app-specific passwords will be required to sign into iCloud when using a third-party app beginning on October 1, 2014.

I got an email about this from them this morning. After the Gmail hack panic last week, I turned on 2-step authentication for my Google account, and have had to use app-specific passwords since then. Oddly, for two-step authentication, Google don’t seem to offer their authenticator app, so it’s an SMS.

Yup, got the same one. A reasonable precaution given it's 'do once per app'. I wonder how they're going to enforce it on installed apps that have an existing iCloud sync (i.e. if you've already installed and are using an app that uses iCloud syncing) though.
